Contributing to a sustainable future

At Adbri we continue to innovate and grow, investing in environmental enhancements that will benefit Australians now and in the future. We’ve made real strides in innovative environmental practices resulting in a 30 percent reduction in carbon emissions since 2010.

Alternative fuels

Our Birkenhead cement facility has embraced alternative fuels and reducing the impact on the environment. Since 2003 over 1,000,000 tonnes of Refuse Derived Fuel has been used in the kilns from waste processed from construction, commercial and industrial activities. This has reduced the facility’s natural gas usage by over 35% and diverts over 200,000 tonnes of waste from landfill each year.

Technical development

Our state-of-the-art laboratories also challenge the norm and look for new sustainable ways to produce and deliver our products and services. From the use of by-products in concrete through to the re-use of returned and waste concrete, we are continually exploring opportunities to make Australia greener. We are the first Australasian laboratory to commission a robotic quality control cement testing facility which improves testing accurate and efficiencies.

Conservation

At Adbri, we are always looking for ways to conserve our natural resources and ensure we are a good neighbour. At Sellicks Quarry in South Australia we’ve invested in water infrastructure upgrades to allow recycled water to be used as our primary water supply for dust suppression activities. This conservation has provided an extra 70-80 ML of portable ‘drinking’ water for the community; strengthening the region’s long-term water security.
